Vienna in international comparison

Premium. Cosmopolitan. Digital

Vienna leads the way in numerous international studies and city rankings especially in categories such as quality of life, infrastructure, culture, safety and innovation. The benefits of all these advantages are felt by visitors and residents alike.

Outstanding quality of life

For many years, Vienna has achieved top positions in a host of international quality of life rankings.

In 2021, Monocle magazine’s “Most Liveable Cities Index” ranked Vienna in sixth place, behind Copenhagen, Zurich, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Tokyo. And Vienna claimed second spot in the Place and fourth in the People categories of the 2021 “Anholt Ipsos City Brands Index”.

In 2019, international consultancy group Mercer named the Austrian capital the most livable city in the world for the tenth year in a row following a survey of 231 major international cities. Mercer has not published any comparable rankings since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Top meeting destination

Vienna is one of the world’s leading meeting destinations. In the statistics on international congresses held worldwide in 2021 published by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) in 2022, Vienna ranked first ahead of Lisbon and Athens with 92 congresses held, of which nine were restriction-free, 22 hybrid and 61 virtual (originally 113 congresses were planned). The Union of International Associations (UIA) ranked Vienna in fifth place in 2020 with 107 international congresses, behind Singapore (738), Brussels (290), Seoul (148) and Tokyo (122). The UIA data for 2021 was not available at the editorial deadline.

Top travel destination

By announcing Vienna as its “Best Holiday Destination 2021”, the leading travel magazine Wi Trip confirmed the strong interest in the city as a destination from the Chinese market in spite of the pandemic. Vienna was awarded the top spot ahead of competing destinations such as Scotland, Queensland and popular destinations on mainland China. Vienna also picked up the most desirable destination 2021 award from luxury travel network Traveller Made®. The Austrian capital saw off stiff competition from international luxury travel destinations including Zurich, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Australia en route to picking up the coveted title in the category “Most Desired Preferred Destination”. The naming of Vienna as one of the World’s Best Cities (24th place worldwide) by international agency Resonance Consultancy was also highly gratifying.
